Tokyo 

The capital city of Japan is an amazing place to spend some time, walking the streets, gazing at the skyscrapers, being dazzled by the neon at night.  There's a wonderful public transport system to move the millions of people around, but it takes some getting used to.

For those who have visited the city, the film "Lost in Translation" probably captures the sense of being a stranger in a strange place, where there are few concessions to the English language.

But it's worth making the effort.  The walking story about Tokyo captures some of the sights and surprises from a few days' stay, but there is much more for people to discover. 

And with the fast efficient train services it's easy to get out for the day, "doon the watter" to Kamakura on the coast, or inland to Nikko among the misty mountains to the north.  Both provide mesmerising displays of Japanese cultural treasures, as described in the stories linked below.
