Rebman Glacier on Kilimanjaro

Although one of the poorest countries in the world, Tanzania has a wealth of attractions for walkers and trekkers.  Best known is the climb of Kilimanjaro, the highest mountain in Africa, with an easier walk up Mt Meru nearby.  This can be combined with visits to the Ngorongoro Crater and Serengeti Plain, where you can watch the wildlife do the walking.

There are detailed pages describing each day from a climb of the Lemosho route on Kilimanjaro (links to the stories below). The "Preparing for Kilimanjaro" story gives useful information for anyone considering such a trek, and now there's a story of "Kilimanjaro Lemosho Route Reflections".  This may add up to the most complete story of a climb of Kilimanjaro available anywhere on the web!  Now (March 2009) BBC's Comic Relief celebrities have just completed a climb using what looked like the same route, taking one more day.  See the BBC website.

There are contrasting stories from two earlier treks on Kilimanjaro (one of them the Rongai Route), separated by three decades, together with a punishing hiking expedition across the Serengeti that ended in a confrontation with the local police!  This is one route you can't repeat nowadays!  You can also read a story by Neil Modie from the New York Times of 20 January 2008, covering a climb via the Machame route when there was a fresh cover of snow on the top and some heavy rain at lower levels!
