England has tended to miss out in most of the early coverage on Walking Stories, given the attention to hiking in Scotland and places around the world. There are of course lots of good places to hike around England, from the rugged mountains of the Lake District to the rolling hills further south, walks around attractive towns and villages, and trails along the banks of rivers and canals.

The first England stories included some easy hiking around Oswestry (only just in England, but definitely part of Shropshire). Three walks around Oswestry have been posted, covering the town itself, Colemere Country Park, and a longer hike along Offa's Dyke, right on the border with Wales.

This has been followed by a story from the coast of Cornwall and a collection from the Isle of Man, maintaining the Celtic influence! Now there's also the first London walk, taking in city centre attractions.

Another, by Chris Moss in the Guardian dating back to 26 April 2003, marks the opening of a footpath along Hadrian's' Wall.

This one by Alf Alderson from the Guardian of 12 April 2003 describes a walk along the Dorset Coast around Lyme Regis, an area of luxuriant vegetation and unstable geology "where nature remains in charge".

The latest addition is this delightful story by Guy Browning from the Family Guardian section of 1 November 2008, describing "Long Marches" beside the River Thames.  Taken for long hikes by his father, Guy now does the same with his own family, encouraging them to believe it is a tributary of the mighty River Mambo!  Find out why the sight of a Lincoln biscuit makes Guy's feet ache.
