Agios Georgios Castle and Mazarakata Mycenean Tombs, Kefalonia, Greece

Summary

This story has least claim to be a walk of any significance, but it does involve walking around Agios Georgios Castle ruins, and then around the Mycenean Tombs just to the south-west. Not hiking really, more a stroll in the sun! The castle was the capital of the island until 1759, and i t's easily reached from Argostoli.  Now it is in ruins, and in need of interpretation for visitors, but it's impressive nevertheless and well worth the visit.  We combined these two historic ruins with a trip to a couple of nearby beaches.

  • I’ll remember most the dramatic tombs.
  • The best bit was the walk around the highest part of the Castle, with views of Mt Ainos and Argostoli.
  • There wasn't a worst bit
  • The funniest aspect was Frances trying to climb the closed gate of the church.
  • I hadn’t expected to find such a large fortress .
  • The word of warning would be to check your route carefully through the maze of roads west of the castle
