Fanari Circular Walk, Lassi, Kefalonia, Greece

Summary

This route is easy but packed with interest.  “Fanari” means “lighthouse”, and refers to the historic white pavilion at the tip of the small peninsula extending north-west from the capital, Argostoli and north of the main resort area of Lassi.

It’s a popular walk for holidaymakers, with rugged limestone formations along the shoreline, the famous Katavothres waterwheel, and the monument to Italian soldiers massacred in 1943. It's an easy route for a half day or in the evening before dinner.  Leave the tough hiking for another day and enjoy this taster of the island!

  • I’ll remember most the fine shape of the lighthouse
  • The best bit was sitting on the rocks as Frances built the first sandcastle of the holiday
  • We enjoyed chatting to a shepherd beside the road
  • It was very moving to see where so many men were slaughtered in wartime
  • The worst bit was a lovely beach spoilt by refuse
  • The strangest bit was finding the seaweed beach
  • I didn’t expect to find a classy bar next to the ruined waterwheel at Katavothres
