Hi to you all. As walking is my main recreation as well as means of keeping fit I thought I would join up and perhaps submit a story or two of various walks I have undertaken around the world.
I am a Teacher in Korea and have no real home address except where I am at the moment. As all walkers are no doubt eccentrics ( I mean why not take a car, bus etc.) I am sure I will enjoy reading and recording walking adventures.
I really am a walking enthusiast. I have found walking alone (solo ) the
most rewarding as other people have other agendas to my own. Kind of like a
poem. One cannot collaborate on a work of art.
To me walking includes hiking. Is that your definition also?
I have undertaken many multiweek hikes, as well as some very memorable one
day hikes.
Some of my favorites include.
- A walk around the north of the Queen
Charlottes off the coast of BC Canada.
- A walk around the mountains of
Ketchikan Alaska.
- Winter hikes up to the Cedar forest in the coastal
mountains of BC.
- Summer hikes on the Kenai Peninsula Alaska.
- Exploring Copper Canyon in Mexico.
- And of course numerous walks in New Zealand and
Australia, and several in Papua New Guinea (Pretty out of date I'm afraid
).
I find walking a very spiritual experience ( funny word, from an atheist,
but appropriate ). One is able to fully exhaust oneself in an endeavor that
is all of one's own, and thus one gains a great feeling of achievement (self worth ) . Walking is a great euphemism for life.
From conception to completion ones walk is one's own. Therefore own can claim
credit for the originating idea, the plan, the preparation, and the actual
walk itself.
Just so in life, honest endeavor in the pursuit of one's goals brings a huge
feeling of well being.
I am sure you are aware of the multitudes who seek to gain glory by
association with famous people/ sports teams etc. Just so in walking or life
in general, those that cheat on honest endeavors actually cheat on
themselves. Denying to their souls the greatest gift of well being that
comes from true hard work, and careful analysis of options ideas etc.
I have connections with Scotland. I remember a great winter walk in the dead of night up in the
border country along Hadrian's Wall - I am sure I could hear the clink of
Roman amour and the scrunch of their sandaled feet on the frosty meadows).
