Japan is renowned for its technological achievements, its super-efficient transport system, and its distinctive culture and cuisine. It is less well known as a walking location, yet it must be one of the best countries in the world for those who enjoy mountain hiking. In addition, there are plenty of opportunities for easier walks, combining countryside with villages, shrines and temples. This collection of easy walks and harder routes gives a cross section of what is available, with some personal reflections.
Walking is the best way to see the country - the cities as well as the countryside - and there are lots of routes to choose from.
These walks were the starting point for the "Walking Stories" idea. The original 14 walks were finally all posted to the site on 7 April 2005. Your comments would be welcome.
