Monbetsudake (866m), Shikotsu-ko, Hokkaido

Summary

This was a hurried walk which gave us a real workout in a short time.  For walkers with more time to spare, it would provide a gentle half-day climb to a fine viewpoint along a quiet tarmac roadway, through attractive woodland, returning the same way.  Direct access from Shikotsu Kohan village.

  • Most memorable for us was turning an easy hillwalk into a challenge, and succeeding!
  • The best bits were the glimpse of the woodpecker, and the hot onsen afterwards.
  • The worst bit was missing out on a view to reward our efforts.
  • Funny moments?  The whole think was a bit ridiculous.
  • No words of warning are necessary for this walk.  No scary bits.
  • We didn’t really expect to get to the top and back in time.
  • What had we never seen before? The meal we enjoyed afterwards – wonderful.
