Tenerife

The Island of Tenerife is one of the Canary Islands group situated in the Atlantic Ocean west of the coast of Morocco.  Therefore although part of Spanish territory, it has a warm climate throughout the year and is a very popular holiday destination.

For most British visitors the possibilities for walking may be low on the priority list compared to sunbathing and nightlife, but like the other popular Spanish island of Mallorca, Tenerife has some wonderful hiking opportunities.  Most obvious is Mount Teide (El Teide) itself, the volcanic peak which dominates the island.  There are short easy walks and tough mountain hikes on El Teide itself and the surrounding volcanic landscape. 

Less well known are the rugged mountains of Anaga and Teno in the north-eastern and western corners of the island, and the fertile Orotava basin behind Puerto de la Cruz.  For visitors to the popular tourist centres in the south-west of the island, the green forests and farmed terraces of these more northerly areas might come as a surprise.  So too the dramatic slopes that may be encountered on some of the walks. 

The smaller island of La Gomera, west of Los Cristianos, is also gaining something of a reputation as a remote location for walking holidays.  Read more on the "Background to Walking in Tenerife and La Gomera" page. 

At present we only have a story for the climb of El Teide, but would welcome more contributions.
