Wide Strathmore extends through the Angus countryside from south-west to north-east, and the Angus Glens reach up into the Cairngorm Mountains (see <a href="http://www.walkingstories.com/region.cfm/region_page_ID/2/country_ID/242/menu_ID/2/region_ID/24/title/Glen%20Clova">Glen Clova</a> introductory page),</p><p>This is splendid walking country, with dramatic hiking&nbsp;routes along coastal clifftops as well as tougher hikes onto the highland plateau - now part of the <a href="http://www.cairngorms.co.uk/" target="_blank">Cairngorms National Park</a>. </p><p>Easier walks lead through the ancient Angus Burghs.</p><p>Carnoustie, Arbroath and Montrose are coastal towns linked by the A92, whilst Forfar, Kirriemuir and Brechin lie close to the A90. Both roads provide fast links from Dundee and the Central Belt of Scotland, and lead on to Aberdeen. The A92 has recently been upgraded to dual carriageway as far as Arbroath.</p><p>The famous <a href="http://www.bbc.co.uk/history/scottishhistory/independence/features_independence_arbroath.shtml" target="_blank">Declaration of Arbroath</a> was signed at Arbroath Abbey in 1320. This was a milestone in Scotland&#39;s struggle to retain its independence. Kirriemuir has a very different claim to fame, being the birthplace of JM Barrie, creator of Peter Pan. </p><p>The <a href="http://www.angusahead.com/home/Home.asp" target="_blank">Angus Ahead portal site</a> links in to many fascinating aspects of present-day Angus, with an informative&nbsp;<a href="http://www.angusahead.com/VisitAngus/ActiveSport/Walking.asp" target="_blank">page dedicated to walking</a>. </p><p><span class="header2">Walking / hiking initiatives in Angus</span> </p><table border="0" width="150" align="right" style="background-color: #ffffff; height: 150px"><tbody><tr><td><p>&nbsp;<img style="width: 327px; height: 206px" src="http://www.walkingstories.com/images/uploaded//Cliffs%20near%20Arbroath.jpg" alt="Cliffs near Arbroath." title="Cliffs near Arbroath" width="327" height="206" /></p><p align="center">Cliffs near Arbroath</p></td></tr></tbody></table><p>Walking routes are being actively developed by Angus Council, with leaflet promoting low-level walks in Glen Clova and Glen Doll. Another is planned for Glen Prosen. A continuous path for walkers and cyclists has been opened between Monifieth and Carnoustie past the Barry Buddon army range, with further work on the coastal paths extending to Arbroath and beyond.</p><p>A Core Paths plan is also being used to build networks of routes around the seven burghs of Angus, with Forfar and Arbroath the first to have a network completed and signposted. </p><p>For those seeking more ambitious long-distance hikes, a Cairngorms National Park circular route is being promoted, linking the Angus Glens with Royal Deeside.</p><p>Country parks at <a href="http://www.angusahead.com/AngusListings/TourismAttractions/CrombieCountryParkG112.asp" target="_blank">Crombie</a>, <a href="http://www.angusahead.com/AngusListings/TourismAttractions/MonikieCountryParkG118.asp" target="_blank">Monikie</a> and <a href="http://www.angusahead.com/AngusListings/TourismAttractions/ForfarLochCountryParkG114.asp" target="_blank">Forfar Loch</a> provide scope for easy walks around lochs, with barbecue and play facilities, interpretative material and a countryside ranger service. </p><p>The popular&nbsp;<a href="http://www.angusahead.com/walkingfestival" target="_blank">Angus Walking Festival</a> reaches its 9th year in 2011,&nbsp;and will take place from 2-5 June. </p><p>&nbsp;</p><table border="0" width="229" align="right" style="background-color: #ffffff; width: 229px; height: 280px"><tbody><tr><td><p>&nbsp;<img style="width: 211px; height: 211px" src="http://www.walkingstories.com/images/uploaded//Crombie%20Country%20Park.jpg" alt="Crombie Country Park" title="Crombie Country Park" width="211" height="211" /></p><p align="center">Crombie Country Park</p></td></tr></tbody></table><p>&nbsp;</p><p>&nbsp;</p>
