This article by Robert Macfarlane describes the writing of Nan Shepherd. Her book, "The Living Mountain", was written in the 1940s but not published until 1977. It describes her thoughts and feelings as she walks around the Cairngorm mountains, the vast Arctic wilderness in the heart of Scotland.
In a sense it is a follow-up to the book which established Macfarlane's reputation as a writer about mountains and how walkers and climbers have experienced them over the centuries - "Mountains of the Mind".
It doesn't provide any walking routes, but it will stimulate your own thoughts about how you feel when you are out enjoying the mountains.< Back to Scotland page for links to other stories
