West Highland Way and Dumgoyne (427m), Strathblane, near Glasgow
Thousands of people walk the 95 miles of the West Highland Way every year, from Milngavie on the northern outskirts of Glasgow to Fort William, in the shadow of Ben Nevis. Usually the hike takes them around a week, although some tough characters cover the ground in under 36 hours in the annual West Highland Way race.
Others however may prefer shorter day walks taking in sections of the Way. This is quite possible for the first section, starting from and returning to Milngavie and taking in the craggy hill of Dumgoyne, the western outpost of the Campsie Fells. You can do the same circuit missing out the hill climb, walking the scenic Pipeline Road to Strathblane.
- I'll remember most the contrast between the well-marked Way and the rough climb up Drumgoyne
- The best bit was the view from the hilltop although it would be better in sunshine
- The worst bit was scrambling up the steep grassy slope
- It was great to see so many different people enjoying walking, cycling, and running along the Way
