Broughty Ferry and Monifieth coastal walk, near Dundee, Eastern Scotland
Broughty Ferry is a long-established coastal resort, and one-time fishing harbour, overlooked by a well-preserved medieval castle. Before the Tay Road Bridge was built, ferries used to cross the short route to Tayport in Fife, across the Firth of Tay. Today it is a suburb of the City of Dundee, providing a popular location for trips to the beach or to wander round the shops and enjoy the pubs and restaurants.
A pleasant walk leads along the Esplanade past the picturesque Barnhill Rock Gardens and on to Monifieth, which lies within Angus Council area. Broughty Ferry beach was recently awarded Blue Flag status in recognition of the great strides in recent years in improving the quality of the beach environment.
An extension route leads inland through parkland beside the Dighty Burn.
- The best bit depends on whether you prefer castles, beaches, rock gardens or nature reserves - there's one of each to enjoy here!
- The eucalyptus trees in the rock garden are particularly impressive
- The only word of warning would be not to wander out too far across the sands at low tide - it sometimes looks as though you could walk all the way to Fife!
