Lares Valley Trail, Peru

This trek was organised by Bill Cook in September 2005, to raise funds for the Aberlour Trust.

Bill says:

Essentially 22 of us set out to the Lares Valley in Peru. This was only the second time that a charity trek to this area had taken place. The trek was to benefit Aberlour Child Care Trust, a Scottish childrens charity. The first time the trek was attempted by a charity half of the group failed to complete it. We were more succesful and trekked in the region of 40 miles over a 4 day period.
We climbed two high passes with the highest at 14,500 feet. We were walking alongside llamas and going past the occasional local settlement. The locals were intrigued to see us, particularly when we walked in kilts.
The walk was much more remote and less touristy than the Inca trail. When the trek ended we visited Machu Picchu and the lost city and then returned to Cusco, the traditional Inca capital (see photos on next page).
The trek was a great success and we raised in excess of £25,000 surplus for Aberlour.
