Newquay to Crantock, Cornwall, England
We left the hotel at around 10am on a typically overcast Newquay morning. We made our way through the beautiful houses at this end of town to the top of the steps that would lead us down to the crossing. At the top of the steps there is the Fern Pit Cafe where we popped to the loo and grabbed some water. If you arrive there at lunch supposedly they have some of the best crab sandwiches in town! The steps down lie in the landscaped cliffside, are easy to manage and proviude spectacular views down the Gannel and onto Crantock Bay. By this time the sun was out and we were worried of getting burnt! Again very typical of Newquay for the seamist to burn off!
At the bottom, there is a cute little shop selling live lobsters, crab and sea related gifts. Alison went on a shopping spree and bought herself a lovely windchime amongst other things. We avoided the charge for crossing on the ferry (£1 for adults, 50p for children) as the tide was out. Instead we used the rickety bridge to make our way across the sandbank. From the far side of the Bay the view of the cliffside was spectacular, with lots of vast, sprawling houses with equally amazing views along the coast!
From the Crantock side of the bay we headed up through the carpark, on the short walk towards the village. When we reached Crantock, after about 10minutes walk we found a pretty little cafe and had cream teas and coffee. There was another cute little shop attached to the cafe and Alison spent a bit more of her hard earned money on more souvenirs! After a donder round the village, taking in the rest of the antique shops, gift shops and a quaint little village garden in the centre, which consisted of a round bit of grass and bench!
We headed out the village in the other direction and out to the coastal paths to the West Pentire Headland. This walk, which took about forty minutes was relaxing in the now comfortable midday sun. Winding paths gave great views back over the bay we had previously crossed and further down the coast. Eventually we came inland slightly again to get ourselves to the Bowgie Inn for some more refreshment! This signalled the end of our walk for the day and we rounded it off with a beer and some pub grub, which was pretty tasty.
From the Bowgie Inn we called ourselves a taxi to take us back to the East Pentire Headland and back to the start of our walk, the Esplanade Hotel.
